A Little History

In January 2005, a monumental shift rocked the landscape of modern comic books when Wolverine and Spider-Man aligned with the Avengers in The New Avengers #1. Fans were initially taken aback as two of Marvel’s foremost superheroes united with Earth’s Mightiest heroes. Questions arose: How could Wolverine simultaneously serve the X-Men and the Avengers? Can Spider-Man truly adapt to teamwork, given his lone wolf reputation? Yet, over time, the partnership flourished, propelling The New Avengers to the zenith of Marvel’s sales charts. Now, it appears the House of Ideas is poised for another seismic shift. As exclusively revealed by CBR, Wolverine and Spider-Man are set to integrate into the ranks of the Fantastic Four!

Marvel has unveiled a slew of forthcoming issues interwoven with their grand Fantastic Four and Avengers crossover saga titled Empyre. Commencing with Fantastic Four #21, both Wolverine and Spider-Man will don new, matching FF attire, formally embracing membership within Marvel’s premier family.

And so it began…

Crafted by Dan Slott, with artistic prowess overseen by Sean Izaakse, the official synopsis teases: “As the Fantastic Four grapple with interstellar peril, who better than Spider-Man and Wolverine for Powerhouse and Brainstorm to enlist in tackling the Earthbound crisis?”

Harkening back to the memories of a child from the 1990s, this occasion marks not the inaugural rendezvous of Wolvie and Spidey with the Fantastic Four. Indeed, as far back as January 1991, a fresh iteration of the FF was assembled, courtesy of a shapeshifting Skrull assuming the guise of the Invisible Woman.

The impostor cunningly deceived the Hulk, Ghost Rider, Spider-Man, and Wolverine, orchestrating their formation into a novel iteration of the Fantastic Four. Can these four renowned lone wolves effectively collaborate as a cohesive unit? Such inquiries underscore the allure of a shared comic book universe for enthusiasts. Although the narrative arc spanned only from Fantastic Four #347-349, its impact was indelible, leading to occasional reunions of the team in subsequent years.

The latest revamp of the Fantastic Four lineup coincides with the broader Emprye storyline, wherein the Skrulls and Kree, traditional adversaries, unite under a singular emperor. Authored by Al Ewing and Dan Slott, with illustrations by Valerio Schiti, the main series promises an exhilarating narrative. Let us anticipate that this fresh quartet will evoke the same excitement as the cherished rendition from the 1990s.
